On Wednesday 13th May 2015 a group of Year 10 students went to Warwick University to receive their certificates for graduating from the Brilliant Club –or Scholar’s Programme as it is now called.
The programme has been devised to help raise the aspirations of students of any age into thinking about applying to the Russell Group Universities which are the top 20 universities in the country. The are encouraged to do this by developing their study skills and knowledge of a subject which is at the cutting edge of research.
Our Year 10 students have been involved in the Scholar’s Programme for over 8 weeks and during this time they have been taught by PhD students from some of the top universities in the country. They first met their tutors when we visited Nottingham University in February and then had 6 tutorials in school.
Each week they were involved in university style research and had to produce a piece of homework each week ready for the following week’s tutorial. Over the Easter holidays they had to complete a 2000 word assignment based on their research. They have just had their results given back to them and they have all passed. A third of them have been awarded First Class Honours for their assignments. A fantastic achievement.
We had a very enjoyable graduation event Warwick University, starting with an introductory meeting in the Arts Centre, with free refreshments. This was then followed by a lecture on study skills in a 200 seater lecture theatre. After a short lunch and some hot pasties, the students were taught how to write a personal statement which is needed for all university applications. Finally, we were treated to some popular music from the Warwick University Music society, not to mention the very short but sweet rendition of Frozen by one of our very own students!
When it was time for the graduation ceremony itself our students were called up one by one for their certificates and shook hands with the Director of the Scholar’s Programme before having some souvenir photographs taken, wearing real graduation caps –(see attached photos). After this event we had a quick tour of campus so the students could see the excellent facilities Warwick University has to offer. We visited the Student’s union; on site accommodation ; their very well equipped sports centre and of course the library, which is open 24 hours a day!A great day was had by all!
