Gifted and Talented

At Cannock Chase High School we believe that all pupils are entitled to an education that will enable them to develop to their full potential. We are committed to providing a sufficiently challenging curriculum for all our students. In addition we will provide opportunities to identify and in turn nurture those who are more able and their abilities.

Students who are Gifted and Talented will demonstrate achievement or the potential to achieve at the highest levels in comparison with children at a similar age or stage in their education.

We aim to identify students in a number of ways as exemplified below:

  • Recommendations from Y6 feeder schools
  • Students who achieved three levels 5's in their KS2 SATS
  • Identification by departments of Gifted and Talented students in their subject
  • Performance in KS3 SATS

The school recognises that our gifted and talented pupils have particular needs which we should meet if they are to realise their potential.

The needs of the more able pupil within the curriculum include:

  • Question and answer sessions that play to the higher-order thinking skills;
  • Only as much instruction as is needed, thus allowing the able to interpret what is required for themselves;
  • Opportunities to develop further work;
  • Work set in such a way that creativity and imagination are involved extensively;
  • Schemes of work that recognise appropriate starting points and subsequent steps rather than 'blanket' instructions for everybody;
  • A variety of teaching styles to accommodate the individual needs of different pupils.

These needs are met in the classroom through a focus on pupil groupings, higher order thinking skills and differentiation.
