A-Level Biology & Environmental Science Field Trip 2008
Preston Montford, Shrewsbury
In September a group of mixed A level Biology and Environmental Science students went off to Preston Montford Field Centre in Shropshire, run by the Field Studies Council, to learn skills and techniques which are used by ecologists and to use these to complete a practical project which counts for 15% of their A level grade.
A great time was had by all (honestly!) despite the cold and the rain on Tuesday and any discomfort was made up for by the regular arrival of cake at 3:30pm every day.
The activities ranged from estimating plant and animal populations, small mammal trapping and pond dipping to analysing soil and water samples for their chemical composition and they got to use a whole range of equipment unavailable in school.
At the end of the course they had developed a better understanding of the way in which science is used to answer questions and some students also learnt that they would rather do science in a warm, dry laboratory.
